Concerned that Lincoln's thin, worry-lined face was so severe it might scare off voters, 11-year-old Grace Bedell found a (0) solution: grow him a beard. On October 15, 1860, she wrote (0) a letter to the Republican nominee outlining her plan to help (25) him out win the coming presidential election. It reads in part: (26) "I have four brothers and two of them will vote for you and (27) even if you let your beard grow, I will get the rest of them to (28) vote for you. You would look like a great deal better as your (29) face is so thin. All the ladies like beards and they would rather (30) persuade their husbands to vote for you and after then you (31) would be President." Lincoln wrote back to Grace four days later, (32) making no promises. However, he began to growing his facial (33) hair shortly afterwards. He had a full beard when, on his own way (34) to his 1861 inauguration, he stopped near Westfield so he could (35) greet his young pen pal. Lincoln said her, "You see? I grew this beard for you." The beard has since become inseparable from the memory of the man.
